Cumin

(Carum carvi, fam. Umbelliferae)

The fruits are small, egg-like, schizocarps, with ash-brown color, composed of two free mericarps (semi-fruits), more or less bent in the form of a reaping hook.

It contains essential oil, liquid oil, proteins, tannins, resins, sugar, etc. Home and foreign pharmacopeia requires that the oil contains 50% of carvone.

Use

Cumin is a known spice, used in the medicine as a carminative, digestive, and galactagogue (stimulation substance, milk), made as infuse. Due to such effect, its use by nursing mothers – in a combination with anise and thyme – is justified.
